Have you wondered why your grass looks good right after you cut it and a day later it has a white haze over the whole lawn? Do you always struggle with disease issues?

Most likely your mower blades are dull! A dull mower blade will rip the tips of your grass instead of cutting it clean. We recommend homeowners sharpen their mower blades at least once a year. Two times a year would be ideal. Most commercial mowing companies sharpen their blades daily.

Why is torn grass blades bad for your lawn?

  • increased disease issues- example: Brown Patch disease
  • stresses the grass
  • loss of color
  • increases time grass takes to recover
  • kills grass
  • increases mowing time

Sharpening your mower blades is a pretty easy thing to do but your will needs some tools. A basic tool set to remove your blades from your mower and a handheld grinder to sharpen the blades. You will want to grind both cutting edges until you remove the ruff edge. This could take 4 to 6 passes on the cutting edge. If you find your blades have huge chunks taken out of them, it may be necessary to just replace them. Take the time now that your mower blades are off to clean under your mower deck. Remove any stuck on dead grass from the mower deck. Reinstall your blades and repeat mid season.

You might not want to mess with it and want to have someone take care of it for you. There is plenty of places that will sharpen your blades. Most places will take the blades off your mower if you bring the mower up to their shop.

Bottom line is sharp blades are a very important thing to keep your lawn looking great. Most people overlook this and don’t even know the last time they sharpened their mower blades. Treatment program, watering, mowing, and mother nature are the four factors that play a huge role on how your lawn will look this year!

Lawn Watering Tips

Proper Lawn Watering Practices

Rainfall cannot be the only source of water for your lawn. At some point during the growing season, you will need to water your lawn. If you do not have an in-ground sprinkler system, there is a variety of watering timers on the market that can make this job a little easier. Watering during seeding season requires unique watering practices.

Do:

  • Water in early am hours before the sun comes up – this will help prevent brown patch
  • Water 2-3 times a week
  • Water infrequently and deep – 3 to 5 inches
  • Use watering timer
  • Aerate

Don’t:

  • Water too much – Over watering can cause disease and root rot
  • Watering too often – causes weak grassroots
  • Watering middle of the day – when temperatures are high, water will evaporate before it’s able to be absorbed into the ground.

Factors to Consider:

Soil Conditions

– Hard compacted soil needs more watering due to water not being able to penetrate the soil. Missouri clay soil needs to be aerated to help loosen soil and help water penetration.  Sandy soils don’t retain water and need to be watered more often.

Grade of lawn

– Steep slopes need more water while low spots needless.

Trees

– More water is needed under trees due to branches blocking the rain. Mature Oak trees soak up to 50 gallons of water a day taking needed water from your grass.

Hot spots

– Grass near concrete, water meter pits, or rocks in the soil will need more water.

Environment

– Temperature, wind, humidity, and rainfall all play a role in your watering schedule.

Am I watering enough?

Place soup cans in the sprinkler pattern, and measure water depth in the cans. You are looking for .33-.5 inches of water per watering. Record how long it takes to reach this amount. Your lawn needs 1 to 1.5 inches of water a week. Split that amount over 2-3 watering.

Lawn Mowing Tips

Proper Mowing Practices

Some might think mowing has little or nothing to do with how your yard looks. This is an important leg of the Kitchen Table method. Every time you mow you should only be cutting ¼ of the total length of the grass blade. This is usually once a week but during spring growth could be every 5 days.

Correct Height To Cut Grass

Cutting high shades the base of the grass and helps with moisture retention in the ground. Higher cut grass will look thicker and leave less room for weeds to grow. It’s better to practice to cut too high then to cut too short. The numbers on your mower deck do not reflect the actual grass cutting height. Measure the blade of grass after mowing to see the actual height of the grass. Normally on residential mowers, this is the highest setting. Fescue lawns should be cut no lower than 3 inches but 3.5- 4 inches is ideal. Higher the better!

Sharpen Your Mower Blades

When was the last time you sharpened your mower blades? Most residential mower blades don’t need to be sharpened yearly but you always want to check them. Look at the tip of your grass blades after mowing. Do they look torn, purple or white? These could be signs of dull blades. Tears on grass tips can also attract disease problems.

4 Steps to a Beautiful Lawn

The Kitchen Table Approach: Kitchen tables come with 4 legs for a reason. Yes, a four-legged table will still stand with three legs but to have a sturdy table you will want all 4. There are 4 main factors that will determine how your yard will look. Having all 4 working together will give you the best lawn on the block.

Leg 1: Mowing Guidelines Mowing can be simple, but make sure you or your mowing company are following our tips.

Leg 2: Watering Guidelines Having an inground sprinkler system or a hose timer will make this a lot easier to manage. It is imperative for you water during the summer to keep your lawn healthy and green.

Leg 3: Mother nature: No one can control this leg. This leg changes on a daily to an hourly basis. Humidity, Temperature, and rainfall can come in extreme amounts that are not desirable growing conditions. Having a healthy strong turf will help rebound when conditions are not favorable.

Leg 4: Choosing the RIGHT lawncare company! It may sound simple to apply fertilizer and weed control products to your lawn, but this is more complicated than you would think. It’s important to use high-quality professional products, not basic “professional” products that can be found in most home improvement stores. Consistent timing of fertilizer, nutrients, herbicides, and insecticides applications are very important on how your lawn will look through the year.

We provide ALL the right elements to a healthy lawn and soil. We work from the ground up to make sure your turf not only looks amazing but is healthy too! When you are healthy you feel and look better? Right?

There are some things we nor you can control, like the environment, or weather conditions. Your grass is a living plant that can be affected by traffic, cultural practices, pets, and the environment. Homeowners must be patient and allow time and Green Elements to transform your yard by a top-quality turf management program.

Lawn Care Results

A weed free, healthy lawn doesn’t happen overnight. It takes persistence and dedication. Each treatment works with the next to produce top quality results. Some lawns will see quick results while others may need as many as 2-3 years to become healthy and lush, just depends the condition of your lawn. We will help and guide you in transforming your lawn but it doesn’t come after one treatment. Any company that claims they will give instant results are the wrong company. Lawn care takes time and patience. Can you become a healthy person over night by just eating one healthy meal?

Handling and applying fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides is something we do not take lightly. We take great care of protecting you, your family, pets, wildlife, and the public. Examples of Marketing Tricks:

  • Special names for products
  • Number of applications vs number of billable applications vs number of visits
  • Upgraded programs – no need for upgrades when your normal program is the best it can be!
  • Lime treatments – most to all yards in St. Louis do not need lime. A soil test should be done to see. Other companies tell homeowners they need it when in fact, is it unnecessary.
